Indian Medical Association (IMA) mourns the sad demise of the world renowned Microbiologist and Biotechnologist Prof. (Dr.) M.K.Bhan who was a former Secretary in the department of Biotechnology and who brought fame to the country by developing the first ever ROTA virus vaccine locally.
Out of all the causes of diarrhoea, Rotavirus is a leading cause of diarrhoea in children less than 5 years of age. It is estimated that rotavirus still causes 872,000 hospitalisations; 32,70,000 outpatient visits and estimated 78,000 deaths annually in India.
Dr. Bhan was an icon of Indian Biotechnology who worked for the health of the masses whether be it in AIIMS where he served as a Faculty or in the health department.
Such was his aura that global institutions like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Wellcome
“ Trust provided international funding to Indian Biotechnology and healthcare under his able control. He was a pioneer in the field.
Thanks to Dr. M.K.Bhan, the Indian Biotech programme has been transformed to international standards and acclaim.
We, once again, pay our richest tribute to the Biotechnology man of India “Prof. (Dr.) M.K.Bhan”.
